'karoshi'



In Japan, it goes by the name “karoshi” or “ Death by Overwork” and is estimated to cause 1,000 deaths per year, responsible for almost 20% of the stroke and heart attack deaths in employees under the age of 60.

In the Netherlands, it has actually resulted in a new physical – psychological ailment called lisure illness, which is affecting a sizable population of its young workforce. Employees and workers actually become physically sick on weekends and vacations when they have to stop working and and try, in vain, to relax.

And here in India, workaholism remains what it's always been: the “venerable addiction”. Working hard and working nonstop has always been a quality admired by Indians. But it's rapidly becoming obvious that this so called respectable addiction could affect the lives and health of millions of Indians, especially the ones involved in sedantry jobs.
